Osteopathy for women’s health
A HEALTHY PELVIC FLOOR
Osteopathy can be a great help with many women’s health issues such as lower back and pelvic pain, genital pain, painful bladder, bladder leakage, pain during sex and endometriosis, to name just a few.
Symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction may arise as a result of pregnancy and childbirth, particularly in the case of long or difficult labours, surgeries in the pelvic region (such as hysterectomies, C-sections, and colo-rectal surgery) and injuries like falls onto the tail bone.
Menopause can trigger issues in a previously healthy pelvic floor such as prolapse or pain. A certain percentage of women will also just develop dysfunction in the pelvic floor with no clear reason as to why.
Pelvic floor and pelvic organ dysfunction can be a contributing factor to bladder or bowel leakage while coughing or sneezing, trouble making it to the bathroom on time, bladder frequency, pain or urgency, painful sex, constipation, gas, back pain, tail bone pain, pelvic girdle pain and lower abdominal pain.
Osteopathy may also be of benefit to people who suffer from endometriosis, and painful bladder syndrome (Interstitial cystitis). These complaints can generate pain in the pelvic floor, lower abdomen, back, and legs. It may also put the pelvis into spasm because the body is trying to protect itself from the pain and irritation.
If you have a complaint that is not mentioned here please make contact to see if Osteopathy could be of help. In making an assessment of pelvic health we look carefully at the position of the pelvic organs, the external and internal associated muscles, your posture, breathing mechanics and pelvic girdle strength. We help you to come up with a management plan tailored to you.

Alex is currently the only Osteopath in Ireland to hold the qualification that allows her to make internal assessments of the female pelvic floor.
In 2017 after treating women already for over 10 years Alex completed 2 years of part-time study in London and was awarded a Post Graduate Diploma in Women's Health in Osteopathy. She is currently the only Osteopath in Ireland to hold that qualification which allows her to make internal assessments of the female pelvic floor. Alex is also currently undertaking a Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist Qualification. While Alex is currently the only Osteopath treating internally at the clinic the other Osteopaths are extremely adept at treating pelvic girdle pain and most pregnancy-related issues. If they feel that internal work is necessary they refer on to Alex.
“MORE PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS!“
"I’m 74 and I’ve suffered from hip pain, and often quite severe knee pain, for the past fifteen years. This was probably caused by episiotomies a very long time ago. When I started treatment with Alex I immediately got relief. And it got better and better. In fact most days now, I have no pain at all. At this stage I attend two or three times a year for a 'top-up'. It keeps me supple and is an essential health tool in my life.
I would never have guessed that a pain in my hip or knee could be cured by internal osteopathy. Yet, as soon as the treatment started, it made sense inside my body. Somebody was finding where it actually hurt and making it so much better. More people need to know about this!”

“RELIEF FROM RECURRING BLADDER INFECTIONS”
“I suffered with UTI’s for many years. I had been to a GP and specialist to find a solution for the recurring bladder infections. As a fit person who exercises regularly, I was not happy with the medical option of always having antibiotics at hand, in case there was another infection.
I discussed this with Alex and she carried out a thorough examination. We discovered that inflammation from previous infections had reduced the ability of the bladder to expand and contract properly. This immobility meant that bacteria couldn't be cleared properly from the area making it vulnerable to infection. By using hands-on techniques the normal movement of the bladder was restored.
The treatment relieved this restriction and after three more sessions, I was enjoying an infection-free life and still do almost 18 months later. It was great that this has worked on my body’s structure, the source was found and was fixed.”

“I HAD NEVER ASSOCIATED OSTEOPATHY WITH GYNAECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS”
”After giving birth to my second child, I experienced a constant discomfort in my lower back.
I found myself constantly stretching my back for relief. Then, ten months after the birth, I began to have a considerable amount of pre-menstrual discomfort. For two weeks in every month, I was tired and my pelvis ached. A reflexologist recommended Alex. My first visit lasted one hour. Within that time she identified that I had a strain of the ligaments of the uterus. She used internal manual therapy to help with the strain and the position and, as a result, the premenstrual pain and low back pain disappeared.
I never associated an Osteopath with gynaecological problems until it was suggested I see Alex. So, now I recommend that every woman who has given birth should see an Osteopath.”
